Xenon bulbs are the link between traditional tungsten gas-filled filament light bulbs and solid state LED technology. Xenon, a noble gas, burns brighter than the metal filament and produces a glow that’s similar to natural daylight. As such, the human eye can process this light easier than an LED. Xenon is used in camera flashes, HID (high-intensity discharge) lighting for warehouses, street lamps, and automotive headlamps. These bulbs also have a much higher rated lifespan than their tungsten counterparts. Modern technology has allowed for xenon bulbs, which used to require bulky capacitors and ballasts, to fit in a small, compact shape that’s suitable for easy transport, such as micro flashlights.
